Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has announced the withdrawal of his country's forces from Iraq. He said that Japanese ground forces had completed their humanitarian mission, but that the air force would continue transporting medical equipment and United Nations teams as requested by UN Secretary General Kofi Anan. Japan is to withdraw 6,000 soldiers from Samawa province in the next two, ending its first major military deployment abroad since the Second World War.
