Italy’s prime minister Romano Prodi will visit Kazakstan on October 7-9 to clarify the position of Agip KCO, the consortium developing the Kashagan oil field, the country’s largest deposit.

Agip KCO is led by the Italian company Eni. In June, the consortium postponed the start of production until 2010 and announced that the development costs would more than double to 136 billion US dollars.

On August 21, the Kazak government announced that Agip KCO had breached environmental legislation, and suspended its work for three months.

Kazakstan’s plans to triple oil production to 150 millions tons a year are based on Kashagan coming on stream.
