Tuesday, 8 May, 2007
No to Repression” protests will take place outside several Uzbek embassies, United Nations and European Union buildings across the globe on May 11-12, according to Shahida Yakub of the Uzbek Initiative in London. The demonstrations are being held to commemorate victims of the Andijan violence of May 13, 2005, when government troops opened fire on a peaceful demonstration, killing hundreds of civilians on May 13.

Demonstrators will call on President Islam Karimov to step down, and will urge the international community to put more pressure on Uzbekistan.

The event will also be marked on May 14 by a press conference by human rights groups in Moscow, the Fergana.ru news agency reported. Speakers at the press conference will include Alison Gill, director of the Human Rights Watch office in Moscow, and Vitaly Ponomarev, director of Central Asian human rights monitoring programme at the Memorial Human Rights Centre.
