The appointment of Murat Garryev as Turkmen justice minister is being seen as a reward for the rapid backing he gave to Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov’s presidential bid. As head of the Central Electoral Commission, he spoke up for Berdumuhammedov during a meeting of the Halk Maslahaty following President Saparmurat Niazov’s death in December, saying he was prepared to ready to declare him the country’s new president even without an election being held.
