Farmers Reluctant to Borrow in North Tajikistan

Despite an increase in the number of organisations offering credit in the Soghd region of northern Tajikistan, the number of farmers seeking loans is not going up.

Narzullo Dodobaev, spokesman for the Tajik agriculture ministry, says a special bank is needed to provide loans just to farmers.

The British government’s aid department DFID, Germany’s GTZ and the United Nations Development Programme are supporting a rural development programme which includes funds which offer loans to start-up businesses on Soghd region.

The audio programme, in Russian and Tajik, went out on national radio stations in Tajikistan, as part of IWPR project work funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
