Evicted and Tricked in Tajikistan

Evicted and Tricked in Tajikistan

When people in Tajikistan are moved from their homes to make way for government-sponsored urban development, they do not always get the compensation they were promised.

In one case, residents of part of Khorog, the main town in the remote southeastern Badakhshan region, were evicted three years ago because a new sports and youth complex was planned for their area. Now they say the local government has reneged on pledges to provide them with alternative housing. Officials respond that the residents are just unhappy about the modest funding available for rehousing.

The audio programme, in Russian and Tajik, went out on national radio stations in Tajikistan, as part of IWPR project work funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
