A fiery editorial in the pro-government Al-Watan newspaper this week asserted that Lebanese critics of Syria refused to acknowledge injustices and mistakes committed by their own country.

The editorial was published on July 22 following Syrian foreign minister Walid Al-Moallem’s visit to Lebanon.

At a press conference after meeting President Michel Suleiman, Moallem said Syria intended to open an embassy in Beirut. He acknowledged concerns in both countries that bilateral agreements could favour one side or the other, but insisted Damascus wanted to find “common ground” and build an equal relationship.

As Moallem made his remarks, a demonstration was staged nearby by people who believe Syria is responsible for the disappearance of family members. The families blame Syria for the disappearances. Moallem indicated displeasure with the protest but said he hoped a joint committee could be set up to investigate the cases of missing individuals.

Al-Watan was one of the few Syrian news outlets that mentioned the protests, with most focusing entirely on Moallem’s statements.
