An influx of substandard building materials in the southern Batken region is costing householders dear.

Reporter Ulukbu Amirova met residents who had bought cheap plastic roofing material imported from China but found that it tore easily and had to be replaced again and again.



Batken is particularly windy so roofing is placed under a considerable strain.



One local trader said Russian-made materials, which were stronger but more expensive, never sold as well as the Chinese goods, so he had stopped stocking them.
