Turkmen president Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov is to hold talks in Moscow in March, under an agreement reached while Russian deputy prime minister Viktor Zubkov was in Ashgabat on December 9.

Official sources say Berdymuhammedov will sign a number of agreements on mutual recognition of educational qualifications and on direct transport links between the two countries. A transport corridor will be created by linking railway networks to a ferry crossing across the Caspian Sea between Makhachkala, in the Russian republic of Dagestan, and the port city of Turkmenbashi.

Experts say relations between Turkmenistan and Russia are good, and Moscow is keen to remain a major partner of Ashgabat in all areas, particularly energy.

“Energy has always taken first place for both countries, and the two leaders are not going to change that on this occasion,” said an analyst in Ashgabat.
