On July 16-18, Turkmen president Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov will pay his first official visit to China, where he will meet President Hu Jintao. Talks will concentrate on the Turkmenistan-China pipeline, construction of which is due to start in 2009.

The proposed route will run 7,000 kilometres via Uzbekistan and Kazakstan to supply China with 30 billion cubic metres of natural gas a year.

Turkmenistan is keen to see the project through as it will provide a real opportunity to diversify the country’s energy exports and dictate prices. Gas exports are currently dominated by the Russian gas giant, Gazprom.
