Afghanistan: Accountability for 1990s War Crimes
Afghanistan: Accountability for 1990s War Crimes
In this report for the Afghan Witness Project, IWPR interviewed Kabul residents who survived the civil war of 1992-96.
The fall of President Najibullah’s government in 1992 brought mujahedin forces into the Afghan capital Kabul.
Unable to form an effective government, the various factions engaged in fierce fighting. Alliances among them shifted from time to time, but the result was always the same – suffering for the civilian population, from indiscriminate bombardment and specific atrocities targeting people for their ethnicity.
IWPR spoke to people about their experiences in the civil war and their hopes that one day the judicial process will catch up with the perpetrators of war crimes.
