24 New Governors set to emerge

Nigerians will today elect new Governors in twenty-four of the country’s thirty-six States.

The Governorship elections in Kaduna and Bauchi States will come up on April 28 while the rest are not due till 2012.

State House of Assembly members will however be elected in all the thirty-six States.

Some States will also elect National Assembly members.

Keen contest is expected in States where the Political Parties faced mixed fortunes in the earlier National Assembly and Presidential polls.

But casting a huge shadow over the elections is the specter of violence that followed the presidential elections on April 16.

There were fresh bombings in Maiduguri, Borno State on Sunday and Monday.

Reports from Delta State also said there was a resurgence of violence in the count-down to today’s polls. Some candidates were assaulted during the final round of rallies.

Chairman of Registered Political Parties in Delta State, Obaro Unuafe said INEC and the security agencies should ensure that there is no violence during voting today.

Amidst all the complaints, INEC has pledged to make today’s elections free and fair.
