Human rights groups hope that the current sanctions against Uzbekistan will continue when European Union foreign ministers meet on March 5 to review the situation inside the country. The International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights has compiled a report on cases of repression in Uzbekistan, but it has expressed concern that EU plans to access Central Asian oil and gas may cloud the ministers’ judgement. The sanctions were first imposed after government troops opened fire on a demonstration in Andijan in May 2005, killing unarmed protesters.
