For the second week running, the crisis in Gaza dominated the headlines in Syria.

On January 10, Asad Abboud, editor-in-chief of the official newspaper Al-Thawra, attacked the United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas. He said that instead, an Arab summit should be called to try to resolve the problem.

In an opinion article published on January 10 on the pro-government website Syria Tomorrow George Hajo wrote that the resolution was an embarrassment to Arab nations, including Egypt and Saudi Arabia which lobbied for its passage,.

In much the same vein, an article in the pro-government newspaper Al-Watan by Ibrahim Darraji said Arab governments that criticised Hamas were turning a blind eye to Israeli crimes in order to curry favour with the United States and Europe. If they really wanted to help Palestinians in Gaza, he said, these countries should sever all links with Israel and threaten to withdraw investments from any state that supported Israel.
