The Shia cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, called on all Iraqis to take part in the elections, to consider Iraq's interests first and to disregard sectarianism and ethnic divisions. The imam for Friday prayers in Najaf, Sadruddin al-Kabbanchi, reported (Sistani's wishes) during his visits with top clerics in Najaf, including Mohammed Sayeed al-Hakim and Bashir al-Najafi. They emphasized that it is important for citizens to participate in the elections so that Iraq’s enemies will not be able to carry out hostile plans. They called on individuals to vote for the list they believe best serves them.
