December 21, 2005 At last, the election for the job of parliamentary speaker is taking shape. The two main rivals are Abdur Rab Rasool Sayyaf and Younus Qanooni. Qanooni is an ethnic Tajik and one of the important political personalities of post Taleban Afghanistan, while Sayyaf is an ethnic Pashtun, who has been one of the prominent Jihadi figures. Who will win will soon be clear, but the important point is the commitment of both to long-term stability. We hope the candidates will keep in mind the overall national interest and the democratic process, and that neither will try to win the job of speaker at any cost, using both legitimate and illegitimate means.
