Editorial: The World Between Two Years

Following are excerpts from an editorial published in the Kassioun newspaper on December 29, reviewing what it regarded as the highlights of 2007.



“At the end of 2006, Kassioun anticipated… that 2007 would see a shift from the defensive to the offensive. The events of 2007 proved that the financial and economical crisis of capitalism reached its worst level yet, and that capitalism was unable to renew itself. This proved that capitalism had no way out of its dilemma except by exploiting the poor people of the world and launching wars against them.



“In 2007, the American assault on the world under the pretext of a war against terror was interrupted as the resistance in Iraq, Palestine and Lebanon halted America and Israel in their tracks and pressed them to find a solution to the impasse they found themselves in as they sought to control the entire region and build their empire there. Syria and Iran succeeded in preventing America from launching wars on them, and placed critical choices before US policy.



“The roles played by China and Russia and the influence they exert on global events underwent a complete change, and they were not in agreement with America on any global issue….



“All this does not mean America or Israel are about to surrender. Not only do they wish to control the [Middle Eastern] region and its resources; it is a matter of life and death to them. They might, therefore, attack Syria and Iran with nuclear weapons.”



On domestic policy, the editorial had this to say, “In order for Syria to achieve victory in the great national battle, it must make the interests of the masses a priority. It must destroy the major centres of corruption and redistribute the national income for the benefit of those who depend on their wages as a source of income.”
