President Bashar al-Assad has told Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that Damascus is willing to continue cooperating with Ankara to achieve peace and stability in the region, the pro-government Syria News website reported on April 27.

Erdogan and Assad discussed a proposal that Israel would withdraw from the Golan Heights in exchange for peace with Syria.

The news site said Turkey’s strong relations with both Israel and Syria could help it in its role as mediator, since Damascus refuses to negotiate directly.
