Displaced and bereaved, Qamar kept herself and her family going.
Qamar al-Said, a contributor to IWPR’s Damascus Bureau project, was killed on November 19 when a rocket fired by the Assad government’s army landed on the farmhouse she was living in.
Her female cousin was killed at the same time.
Qamar is a pseudonym, and we continue to use it after her death to protect her relatives.
She used to live in Douma, on the outskirts of Damascus, and was married with three daughters and three sons. One of her sons was killed when he was 18, working alongside Free Syrian Army Forces as a photographer. Her husband was recently left disabled by a government air strike.
The family relocated to the Damascus countryside when conflict made life in Douma untenable.
Qamar began writing for the IWPR's Damascus Bureau this year, as one of many female contributors with no background in journalism but with a desire to tell people about life amid war and oppression in Syria.
We will be publishing articles by Qamar and a tribute written by her niece.
