School Year a Hefty Financial Burden on Families

Tajik parents are finding it harder than ever to afford the uniforms and equipment their children need at the start of the school year.

In a country where over half the population lives below the World Bank-defined breadline of two US dollars a day, many children have had to work over the summer holiday to help earn enough to cover the outlay.

A number of rights groups believe it is wrong to prevent children from working, although they are against allowing them to do heavy manual labour.
