Twenty-eight former opponents of the Afghan central government joined the peace and reconciliation process in Paktia province on January 4. Addressing a gathering held in the provincial capital Gardez, governor Hakim Taniwal praised the step the men had taken, saying they could live their lives without fear. Afterwards, two of the men spoke for all of them in urging other armed men to lay down their weapons and join the legitimate Islamic government of Afghanistan.
