One of the top-scoring students in this year’s school-leaving examinations has never had electricity and uses an oil lamp to study in the evenings, the pro-government website Syria News reported on August 1.

Tamador al-Sarhan was the fourth-highest-scoring student in Syria and the top in Aleppo province.

She lives with her 12-member family in a two-room house in the village of Ayn al-Jamos, about 100 kilometres from the city of Aleppo.

Sarhan won her Baccalaureate – a 12th-grade qualification for admission to higher education – by studying on her own.

She said her village has few teachers and the quality of education is low. Now she plans to go on to study media at the University of Aleppo. Her siblings are continuing with their education, too, despite the lack of electricity in the house.
