The British government has failed to fulfil promises made to opium poppy farmers in Afghanistan, the director of the Senlis Council said at a press conference in London recently. “It is the reason behind the increase in insurgency and attacks on our teams in Kandahar, Helmand and Nangarhar provinces,” he said. He said the Taleban were paying compensation to farmers whose poppy fields had been destroyed by the Afghan government.
