Relative of Rahat Aliev Resigns over Family Scandal

Berik Imashev has resigned as Secretary of Kazakstan’s Security Council because of the criminal action brought against Rahat Aliev, according to a June 12 report in Vremya newspaper. Aliev’s son is married to Imashev’s daughter,

Aliev had been married to President Nursultan Nazarbaev’s daughter Dariga, but their divorce was announced on the same day.

Aliev, a former Kazak ambassador to Austria has been charged with kidnapping two heads of major Kazak bank, Nurbank.

Deputy justice minister Serik Nugmanov, known to be a friend and relation of Aliev, has also fallen prey to the scandal and has been sacked.
