A roundtable discussion on the illegal drugs trade in the Caspian and Caucasian regions will be held in Turkmenbashi on September 17-19.

Experts from Turkmenistan, Iran, Russia, Kazakstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia will discuss a single policy that could help strengthen their fight against drug-trafficking.

Turkmenistan borders on Afghanistan, the world’s largest opium producer and supplier on the world market. After years spent ignoring the problem under former president Saparmurat Niazov, Turkmenistan has become more actively engaged in the fight against drugs this year.

President Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov has declared a full-scale war on drug addiction and is developing an action plan “to completely eradicate this most dangerous social vice”.
