Women have been told they have the right to contest elections and participate in active politics.
Emmanuel Onwubiko, the National Coordinator of Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, reminded reporters in Abuja that Nigerian women contested elections in the past and should have no reason to abdicate this responsibility in the present political dispensation.
He cited the late Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti as an example of a woman who contributed to the political evolution of the country.
Onwubiko frowned at men who did not believe women should contest elections and said it was an erroneous and archaic belief.
He said female participation in election and other political activities were necessary because women statistically outnumbered men and were more in touch with the needs of the people.
