Journalists in Uzbekistan have been invited to meet a leading American expert on their country on March 11.

The United States embassy in Tashkent has arranged the meeting with Dr Roger Kangas, a professor at the Near East South Asia Centre for Strategic Studies in Washington.

Kangas has worked at leading US academic institutions and advised government agencies like the National Security Council and the State Department, as well as NATO. His PhD thesis was on Faizullo Hojaev, an important figure in the creation of Soviet Uzbekistan in the early part of the 20th century.

“Such meetings help the Uzbek media get a better understanding of the US vision of events in the world and the post-Soviet region,” said Sergei Naumov, a journalist from Khorezm who has attended a number of meetings of this kind. “Through this event, the Americans want to show how serious about working with [our] media”.
