The Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan has invited Iraq, its neighbours, permanent members of the Security Council and donor countries to meet in New York on September 18 to discuss Iraq’s future. Annan urged the international community and the Iraqi government to make the welfare and the security of the Iraqi people top priorities. He said that a continuation of the current violence would lead to the collapse of the government and a potential civil war that would affect the whole region.
