President Jalal Talabani said that stability in Iraq would pave the way for better relations with Syria. Interior Minister Jawad al-Boolani said that negotiations with the Syrians had proved productive on the security front, with Damascus agreeing to hand over a number of high-ranking officials in the Saddam regime. They include the ex-intelligence head Taher Jalil al-Habboosh, onetime Baath party regional leadership member Mohammed Younis al-Ahmed, and the former vice president Ezzat al-Doori. Iraqi and Syrian negotiators also discussed bilateral relations and efforts to achieve national reconciliation in Iraq.
