The slums of Damascus continue to grow as more poor residents pour into the capital. Slum-dwellers complain of inadequate services and infrastructure. Many of the residents are farmers who migrated from far away rural parts of the country or public employees or even college students. The slums of Damascus today house almost 45 per cent of the city's population.
