Teachers at the Bakhtar high school in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, boycotted classes on May 20 to press their demand that three months’ worth of back salaries should be paid. The teachers warned they would not return to school until they were paid the wages owed to them. The school’s 10,000 students joined their teachers in the strike. Officials at the provincial education department have not responded to the teachers’ demands.
