Deputy prime minister Ahmed al-Chalabi said the trial of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein is fair. Chalabi, head of the Iraqi National Congress list vying for seats in the next parliament, said the trial was a good example of separation of powers. He also said no political pressure was being exerted regarding the trial. He expressed disappointment toward those who continue to defend the rights of criminals and assailants, saying their victims still suffer the heavy burdens of the former regime. Chalabi referred to the former regime as scum and shallow, maintaining that it destroyed and looted Iraq. He said Iraq needs to rebuild and the people should make use of the country’s resources.
