The Russian foreign ministry has denounced the caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad published recently in a Danish newspaper. In a press release issued by the Russian embassy in Kabul, the foreign ministry said Russia believes that publishing such cartoons will create distrust among the peoples of the world and paves the way for extremists to exploit the situation. “Russia is following with concern the impact of the publication which provoked Muslims worldwide,” the statement added. Publication of the cartoons in a Danish newspaper, and their republication by some European dailies, sparked violent demonstrations in Afghanistan and other Muslims countries last week.
