The Syrian defense minister has halted legal proceedings against security service members accused of killing a human rights activist, according to a February 24 report from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, SOHR.

According to the SOHR report, Hassan Turkmani in Homs shot and killed human rights activist Sami Matoq and his friend Johnny Solomon on October 14.

Sami’s uncle, Khalil Matoq, an attorney and human rights activist, said he would reach out to President Assad to intervene in the case.

“We will try to work through all legal channels and through Syrian, regional and international organizations to bring justice to these two boys,” he said.
