Poor Tajik Living Standards Increase TB Threat
The World Health Organisation says tuberculosis continues to pose a major health threat in Tajikistan.
IWPR reporter Khurshed Durakhsh says the infectious disease spreads easily amid poverty, damp living quarters, and unhygienic conditions. A highly mobile population of labour migrants only accelerates the rate of transmission.
TB rates are especially high in the penitentiary system. The justice ministry says 700 of the 15,000 cases recorded nationally are in prison.
The audio programme, in Russian and Tajik, went out on national radio stations in Tajikistan, as part of IWPR project work funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
