Political Drama Intensifies As Presidential Election Draws Closer
New scenes have continued to unfold in Nigeria’s political drama with just hours to go before the much expected presidential election.
The media is awash with tales of endorsements, last-minute campaigns, collapse of alliances and even weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Ethnic groups, business organisations, religious associations, student bodies and political parties appear to be in competition to rally support and proffer endorsements for the main contenders in the race.
Forty-six political parties, including the Labour Party, are reported to have thrown in their lot with President Goodluck Jonathan, the candidate of the PDP. Six former co-contestants have metamorphosed into Jonathan’s mobilisers.
Prominent Northern citizens and groups are also busy rallying support for the CPC.
The ACN, which has found itself in the role of the beautiful bride, has obviously rejected both the PDP and the CPC which were seeking its hand in a marriage of convenience.
The CPC’s presidential candidate, former Head of State General Muhammadu Buhari, who could not hold back tears in Abuja on Wednesday, as he spoke passionately about his love for Nigeria, has indicated that he will call it quits if he does not return to State House via Saturday’s election.
There has also been some gnashing of teeth for a woman and her 2-year-old child in Oyo State, who were sent packing by her husband for voting for a different political party from his own in the National Assembly election.
Meanwhile, INEC chairman Professor Attahiru Jega has assured the nation that the weekend’s presidential election is on course even as more high profile observer missions are arriving in the country.
