Anti-narcotics police in the northern province of Sar-e-Pul have shot and killed two farmers who resisted efforts to destroy their opium poppy crop, officials said on May 10. Provincial governor Sayed Iqbal Munib said the police opened fire after a group of farmers attacked them with sticks and stones. He said two other farmers and 10 policemen were also injured. Afghanistan, the world’s main producer of opium, is under international pressure to end poppy growing.
