Ombudsman is Clear Favourite in By-Election

Wednesday, 21 March, 2007
As the deadline for nominations to by-elections in Kyrgyzstan passed on March 19, Ombudsman Tursunbay Bakir Uulu was seen as the front-runner in a field of 12 standing in the Otuzadyr constituency. Bakir Uulu has been elected to parliament on several previous occasions. The president’s brother Janysh Bakiev, another possible favourite in this constituency, decided not to stand, saying that running for the seat and winning it would have reflected badly on the president’s image.
