Officials in the northern province of Samangan on March 28 warned farmers of severe consequences if they return to opium poppy cultivation this year. Officials said that they had eradicated 14,500 acres of poppy crops and would deal severely with those who resume cultivation. However, the farmers argued that they will grow poppies if the government cannot provide them with more assistance.
