A remote-controlled bomb killed nine Afghan policemen in the Maiwand district of the southern province of Kandahar on March 17, officials said. The Afghan interior ministry confirmed the incident, saying the police died as they were shifting the bodies of four foreigners who had been kidnapped and killed by Taleban militants. Provincial governor Assadullah Khalid blamed the enemies of the Afghan people for the attack, vowing to arrest the culprits.
