Government workers have been threatened with death in “night letters” distributed in the south-eastern provinces of Khost and Paktia. Written in Pashto on plain paper, the pamphlet warn that “servants” of the government will be eliminated if they do not quit their jobs. They accuse public-sector employees, even if they are just working as cooks, of spying for US forces. Khost governor Mirajuddin Patan, who has himself received such threatening letters, says they are the work of terrorists who want to strike fear into people’s hearts.
