The chief of Tala Wa Barfak district of the northern province of Baghlan has been sacked by the provincial governor for complicity in opium poppy cultivation, officials said on May 16. Governor Mohammad Alam Rasikh said he dismissed the district chief after receiving information that he had allowed farmers to grow poppy over 430 acres of land in exchange for bribes. He said governors could discharge any district or police chief found to be involved in the drugs trade, but new appointments to these posistions required the approval of the Afghan president.
