Engaging, committed and larger than life, Ammar Al Shahbander was IWPR’s Chief of Mission in Iraq until his untimely death in a car bomb attack on May 2, 2015.

That evening, Ammar and two friends were walking down a street in the Karrada Dakhil district of Baghdad when a stationary vehicle nearby exploded. Ammar was killed; so were 14 other civilians. Emad al-Sharaa, who worked with Ammar in the Baghdad office, was seriously injured but is recovering.

This short film, from 2010, shows Ammar Al Shahbander and colleagues in IWPR's Baghdad office.
