The Kurdish Coordination Committee in Syria reported that the security services have warned Kurdish activists in Aleppo and Hasaka that they could be tried for treason if they engage in protests or peaceful demonstrations.

The committee, which is made up of three Kurdish parties, said in a June 5 statement that it would continue the peaceful struggle for Kurdish rights and for the creation of a law that treats all Syrians equally.

Many Kurds in Syria do not have citizenship.

Instead of cracking down on activists, the committee said, the government should focus on economic and environmental issues, particularly in eastern and northeastern Syria where many Kurds live.
