Officials from Russia and Turkmenistan will meet in Moscow on April 26 to discuss Russian investment in Turkmen oil and gas. Two major players, Lukoil and Itera, are interested in developing Caspian shelf deposits and building plants to produce liquefied natural gas, while a third, Rusal, wants to build an aluminium plant and the gas-fuelled power stations needed to run it.

This major government-level meeting follows President Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov’s visit to Moscow on 23-24 April – his first official visit there since he was elected. During that trip, he pledged to keep to the 25-year gas deal that was signed with Russia in 2006.
