Key Legislative Appointment Due in Late March

Tuesday, 13 March, 2007
Turkmenistan’s Halk Maslahaty or People’s Council – currently the supreme legislative body - will get a new head when it meets on March 30. The post of chairman and deputy heads were expected to be filled straight after President Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov was inaugurated on February 14, but this did not happen. Some NBCentralAsia experts believe this reflects indecision in the new Turkmen leadership about whether to leave the Halk Maslahaty with the broad powers it now holds, or assign it some reduced role.
