Israel is the party that benefits most from the terrorist attacks that have hit Iraq in recent weeks and left hundreds of people dead or injured, said an August 24 editorial in the official Al-Thawra newspaper.

The daily’s editor-in-chief, Asaad Aboud, noted that there had been an escalation in attacks targeting Iraqi civilians since the withdrawal of American troops from Iraqi cities earlier this summer.

"All this terrorism in Iraq serves Israeli interests," he wrote, adding that the Jewish state has a hand in perpetrating attacks even if its role was indirect.

He added that Syria, on the other hand, had an interest in fostering peace, security and stability in the neighbouring country.

He said the attacks were meant to send a political message to the Iraqi government, which was trying to lead the country to unity and stability, and prove that the Iraqi authorities were not capable of protecting their land and people by themselves.

The author accused neo-conservatives in the US administration of being behind instability in Iraq. He said there was a link between this group’s attempts to foment turmoil in Iraq and oppose the withdrawal of foreign troops and Israeli interests in the region.
