National reconciliation is one of the key factors for Iraq to achieve peace and stability, Syrian foreign minister Walid Moallem said during a press conference with his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki.

Moallem said the multinational forces led by the United State need to pull out, and Iraq needs to build up its own security and military forces, dissolve the militias and bring all political factions into the decision-making process, the state-run Al-Baath newspaper reported on April 25.

The press conference was held during a meeting of foreign ministers from Iraq's neighbours, held in Kuwait last week.

Moallem and Mottaki said they agreed on regional issues including Iraq, Lebanon and the Palestinians. The foreign ministers also said their countries were building up their economic and trade relations.

The Syrian foreign minister refused to comment on reports that Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert is considering a withdrawal from the Golan Heights in exchange for peace with Damascus. Moallem would say only that Syria wanted a just and comprehensive peace.
