An agriculture official who works in an office currently being investigated for theft has been shot dead in Homs, the website All4Syria reported on September 12.

Rateb al-Yousef, 48, was killed in his car on the night of September 11, according to All4Syria.

The website, which is pro-government but advocates for reform, reported that Yousef had been appointed a manager of the Homs agriculture department the same day he was killed. All4Syria reported that some divisions of the department are under investigation for stealing and smuggling millions of litres of kerosene.

All4Syria said the killing was an assassination, citing security sources who said they believed the shooting was linked to an investigation into the theft. One security source said Yousef was probably shot by kerosene smugglers.
