The Afghan Red Crescent Society, ARCS, on May 16 launched an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign, with the main focus on students in the capital Kabul. Dr Fatima Naseer, who heads the AIDS programme with the ARCS, said the aim was to reach around 1,000 students in schools in the city’s 5th and 6th districts of Kabul during the initial stage. The programme kicked off in a middle school in Khoshal Khan Mena. Dr Naseer said the drive would be extended to other provinces if the first phase proved successful. According to the health ministry, 54 people have been identified as HIV-positive in Afghanistan to date.
